A girlfriend of mine was single for a very long time. She seemed to run away from any man who was interested in her. Originally I thought “That’s Weird!”, now I look back on those days with a little bit of sadness.
One night when we were out on the town she told me her first long term boyfriend had given her herpes. He didn’t even know he had it when he passed it on, they found out together. I could see she was nervous when telling me this, almost waiting for a bad reaction. The poor thing, she must have had it tough from some people. I just gave her a hug.
On this night we talked about all kinds of things she had to deal with. One story in particular made me mad. One of the men she dated for a while, on finding out she had herpes, just changed his phone number so he never had to speak to her again. They’d been seeing each other for months. So on top of all the self loathing and image issues she was dealing with herself, she also had to deal with heartless people like this man.
The guy was a jerk, but you get that. There are plenty of awful people out there. The thing that I found really sad about this story was that when this little soul destroying episode happened, she had no-one to turn to. She was still coping with the shock herself, the self loathing and self disgust, so she had not told anyone yet. She had to shoulder this burden on top of her own issues.
Looking back on that night, I am glad she opened up to me and gave me the honor of supporting her. I think she appreciated the understanding ear too as many times after that night, she confided in me with all manner of issues she faced, things you’d never dream of unless you were in the situation. I hope I was a good friend to her during this tough time, I certainly tried to be.
There was one thing I know she found especially useful and that was an STD dating site. Without it, I’m not sure if she would ever have gotten back on her feet as far as romance in concerned as, after a few bad rejections, the whole scene was just too intimidating for her.
One of the things about this dating site she really enjoyed, was the understanding everyone had for what she was going through. The people she met and dated from this site all shared her experiences so they knew what she was going through. Through this understanding they provided real support.
The other thing which is pretty unique about STD dating sites is the way the websites themselves support the community they foster. Sure, they have forums and chat like every other dating site, but they also have some really useful tools. Like a daily fact sheet or news column about STDs to help the members understand what’s going on. The one she joined even had live counselors at the site, to help her through the issues specifically relating to her carrying the disease.
I’m glad she found it. She’s married now and he loves her so much.
