Genital Warts, a sexually transmitted disease caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), are spread by coming into contact with anyone who is infected. While this means that young teens may be exposed to pictures of both male and female genitalia, it is important that they know exactly what HPV can do.

As a parent, you shouldn’t worry about your teens being shown images like this without your prior knowledge. Most schools do require parents to be notified before students are exposed to genital warts pictures and other images of sexually transmitted diseases. You may even have the option of requesting that your teen not attend the class or view the images. However, you should think twice about doing this. Learning about genital warts, especially seeing the images, can help show your teen that unprotected sex is not a good idea. Anything that helps reinforce that idea is something you should definitely want your teen to hear and see.
